Doomed for being part of a Deemed university

After giving numerous competitive exams,we,the students, got into our dream colleges, the colleges which had the status of a DEEMED university.Suddenly on 18th Jan,2010 the central government has decided to shorn off its deemed university status. However to safeguard the interest of approximately 2 lakh students enrolled under these universities, the government has decided to revert the colleges back to their earlier parent university. This decision has jeopardised the life of the students. It makes us feel homeless and lost in the milling crowd of competing students. There are instances where the students have come all the way from corners of this country, leaving behind the opportunity of being a part of some other reputed colleges which still continue to be deemed. The motive of the government in taking such a drastic decision is to reform the education system but this in turn is DOOMING the lives of the students studying in these DEEMED universities.

Deemed university has the right to have their own set of rules, fee structure and syllabus. Now suddenly being reverted back to some other university, the entire system and process of studying and scoring changes.Life totally changes for us.This in turn takes a toil over the students studying in these colleges. All our dreams of passing out from a reputed deemed university is shattered.

We scored very good ranks in both national and state level entrance exams to make our way into these colleges. We studied as much as our other fellow friends who still continue to be a part of other deemed universities. What we want to ask the government now is how is this going to reform the education system and why should we suffer? If the sole interest of the government is to put a check on the so called "family fiefdoms",then why not give them a chance? Why punishing us?What was the mistake on our part? Its a punishment for the students in disguise. Our future is at stake. We are getting a feeling that we have been demoted. Will just demoting 2 lakh students reform the entire education system?

  1. If they are so concerned about the "standard" of education then they should devise steps to raise the standards and see to it that they r implemented properly instead of snatching away the "deemed university" status of colleges thereby ruining its reputation...

  2. With all due respect to the Hon'ble HRD Minister's "far sighted" attitude for achieving "education-reforms", doing away with Deemed Universities aint gonna solve everything. One point is that the Deemed Universities provide far better educational environment than the state-run technical universities of that state. Even if they charge more, they build better infrastructure and appoint better faculties at a higher pay-scale. The Deemed Universities are infact given credit for bringing revolutionary change in the curriculum of technical education. And look at the placement statistics too, no one can beat them. If DUs are responsible for the bread and butter of many people and their families then its really a shame that all DUs have to suffer because of a few selfish DUs.

  3. good job on the post, and i agree to a certain extent with what you said Tania, but i still believe it is the right direction to go as far as the reform in concerned. i dont think snatching away the deemed univ status, would decrease the quality of your degree, you will still be rated based on the college that you went to, and not the university that eventually gives you the degree. So in the near future, and by that i mean in the next 5-6 years (that is prolly the only time, the college that u attended, or the degree you have matters) people would still recognize the institution that you went to, and will recognize your degree accordingly.

So govt's decision to go ahead with the reform is the probably the right decision in a long-term perspective.

  4. Though Sibal assures that no student studying at any of these universities would be "adversely affected"; he himself seems well aware of the uncertainities & unrest each one of them would have to go through, by his careful selection of the word "adversely".

  5. we believe - "TODAY'S STUDENTS = D FUTURE RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS"

D decision 2 cancel d DEEMED status of various institutes comes as a shocker 2 all of us...!!
there z now a big question mark ahead of d future of lakhs of students....
    Y ??
its definitely not appropriate 2 do ds....
doin ds may or may nt REFORM d educational system...but itz gonna DOOM our futures 4 sure..!!
d govt needs 2 make SUSTAINABLE changes....dat z gonna improve d current status....widout harming d future of so many students....

Cancellin d deemed status z nt d solution 2 improvement of education.

  6. Though all these dicision has been taken but i still beleive that studing under a deemed university is completely diff frm any other universities. So the govt should nt remove d deemed status of any of dis deemed university coz it will only effect d carrer of 2 lakh students. They provide us quality education...& i am fully satisfied with watever my university(S'O'A)is providing me...hope our voice will make a difference in dis dicision.

  7. If the Tandon committee found that the standard of education of deemed universities was inadequate, then I suggest the centre should set up another committee to check the standard of education in the state universities to which the students of the DUs will be reverted to. The state university in orissa has approximately the same no. of holidays as there are working days in any DU curriculum here. Again, DUs work harder to maintain their reputation than any other college under a state university.
One more thing,if the centre is so concerned about maintaining the standards, why is it taking action so late when already so many students have taken admission into DUs. What were the officials doing at the time of admission?

  8. when we first took admission here we wer so certain abt our future but nw evrything seems so different..we are being punished for something which we havent done..as far as the reform is concerned, its just ruining the well shaped career of students..i truly blv that being under a deemed university is a far better option than being in the clgs run by the state..so keeping my fingers crossed i hope dat the decision made is in our favour..jai ho..

  10. i think its a completely wrong decision taken by the HRD to snatch away the deemed status of the universities.Deemed universities are far better den state universities in every aspect and the standard of education will not go up to high if our university(SOA) is derocagnised frm deemed status.student's career will be in real danger.

  11. i just pray watever decision sc takes.. bt students' interest should be given more importance... because its nt about 500-600 students..approx 2 lakh lives depend on dis decision. supreme court should giv atleast a chance to dese universities to work on their shortcomings. hope 4 the best!!!

  12. This sudden decision of d HRD aginst d DUs has forced the students as well as their parents to think seriously about whatever is goin on....while d students appeared through so many competitve exams and finally got through these universities everything was so certain but now amidst everything seems to be uncertain......
if we compare d education between deemed university nd state universities.....we dont feel lyk saying dat education system would upgrade its present situation if we are shifted under our parent university.......coz dere r only strikes in dese colleges nd most of the tym the classes r suspended...so its a big ques.......if such are conditions prevailing in state universities den i dnt find ny point in snatching away the deemed status of dese universities.......coz dat cnt brighten d future of we d students.....instead ill put dem towards a more painful and danger journey!!
and once d student took admission in dese DUs dey were all assured of it....nd nw govt sud nt suddenly awake with a view to reform d education system....
LETS HOPE DAT D DECISION IN R FAVOUR........

they r tellin dat dey vl take care of r future by giving us deegre nd handing us to d parent university.....but d status nd environment of d clgs under dem is just hell...nd 4 d students of DU's it vl b like going a decade back in d race of human kind.....d govt before handing v all students in d hand of d parent universities shuld 1st survey d conditions nd facilities....teching quality etc....wid all DU's nd den take d decision...just prayin to god to make evrythng all rite.nd hopin 4 decision to b in r favour...lets cross d finger nd wait 4 d desicion...

  15. Through most of the post I did not find a good reason that how going into a Nationalized University will hamper a students growth. I think deemed University in the name of better infrastructure take outrageous fee so only the rich can go.
Last time when I checked IITs were government institutes. They are the premier institutes and no students have a cracked tougher exam then them.
Also, A private Deemed University after conversion will be a set of private colleges. I do not see anything special these deemed universities are doing which a private college will do less. Only thing which will come out of it is better student quality because of stricter seat distribution. People wont be able to buy seats at risk of some deserving student loosing a chance.

Also as deemed University these institutes have low faculty standard and in some cases not even adequate numbers.

So chill down guys and develop a vision that this move can have short term difficulties but long term goals look golden!! Grades will be produced state wise, if your institute is that good you will see a direct comparison.....which is good!!

if it is said tht, deemed universities jst take higher fees n do nothing for students then ,y other DEEMED universities are still allowed to cont.derecognising only a few deemed universities wont change the education system.it will only hamper the students life.
irrespective of the fact that the students are rich or poor ,all the students in these colleges worked hard to get seats here and suddenly snatching away the deemed tag gives the feeling that all the effort goes down the drain.
in your words-" I did not find a good reason that how going into a Nationalized University will hamper a students growth."
-but infact it is hampering the students growth.if one compares between a government school n a private school, though studying in private schools cost more but everyone knows tht private schools avail the students with better faculties and facilities....and no one prefers to study in govt. schools.the same thing is happening with these students.

  17. i m a 2nd year student of S.O.A univesity n now our colg is going to be a part of the state university then wht abt the money which i have already paid . i paid for it thinking tht it is going to b a one time investment on my part n i m goig to get a degree frm a deemed university.
if i m going to get a degree frm a state university then wht abt my money ..
then why doesnt the govt. refund our money.
it seems as if i was shown something n i m given something else.my question to the goverment is tht is it possible to refund the money of all the 2 lakh students tht r going to suffer ???if this is not done then i m sure that students like me who have cum frm a midddle class family have no other choice than suicide.

  18. If the ministry's motive is to reform the education system, they should upgrade the standards of the state-run universities before re-affiliating the colleges managed by the deemed universities to them. Moreover, as Mr.Kapil Sibal stated, they desire to uproot the concept of deemed universities; If it is so, then why target just 44 universities of all? This gesture contradicts Mr. Sibal's statement itself.

  19. Very well written Blog, Tania. Keep it up. Regarding Deemed University status whether good or bad , i would not like to comment but would like to put few facts which forces me to think otherwise about the intentions of our Government .Quoting what Our MP Mr Kapil sibal has said "It is a policy decision that all the deemed universities will finally go," Sibal told reporters at the 10th Editor's Conference on social sector issues here. "The concept of deemed universities from the country will go in the near future and this is part of the reform process. We are putting in place the required legislations," Sibal added.

Also at the same time they are giving chance to 44 Deemed Universities to improve. The high-powered committee and the task force had arrived at the findings after evaluating the functioning of 126 deemed universities in the countries. While 44 of them were found unfit to retain the deemed status, 44 others have been given directions to fill up the lacuna in their respective functioning to enable them retain the status.

  22. Completely against hrd decision .. it makes no sense . they guarantee we wont suffer if at all reform is required then a proper inspection has to be done & then a scope for improvement should have been provided. When ugc certifies a college as Grade A n u put it in engendered species u dint respect ugc n their certification .. simply politics on front nd not concerned for the students carrier..i agree to pooja comment only 44 colleges y ? it should be all

    chk dis link out guys
    http://indiaedunews.net/Universities/'Doomed'_universities_unite_to_implead_at_Supreme_Court_10326/

    As per the abov link

He said the UGC panel consisting of educational experts visited the campuses, while the Tandon panel just saw the power point presentations shown by the universities.

u cant kid with the carrier of 2 lakh ... can u ?

    ReplyDelete
  23. @BinzidD- i completely agree with u....
the TONDON panel just gave evry universties 15 min time to present themselves...in those 15 min 5 were alloted to introduce themselves....another 5 to present there university nd d rest 5 were question answer...so the Tondon panel juged evry university by the d person who presented it nd not by actually considering all d points by visiting each of them....so if d supreme court agrees with this decision it will b unfair to 2 lakh students who r part of dese institution......

and i thnk then d govt will b SOLELY RESPONSIBLE 4 ruining d carrier of d students nd hence spoiling d future of INDIA...

    ReplyDelete
  24. see, obviously sibal aint the only one to take the decision..f9..then who does?
umm the UGC? well..now just googling the UGC members name would show u someone named A.Samamt...ne guesses who is he...? yup, he has no other official status presently, but he is the all in all of KIIT, bbsr. so, now the picture becomes clearer.
this is what is pulling our nation down. just because of dirty political minds of such people at the top level, today we r on verge of...(god knoes what).
    duh.. :( :X

We stand ahead of kiit only in placement and none else ..
And he aint the only man in ugc ..
A committee cant be 1 man army right
but there also lies many flaws with our college
    1. high fees 1 lac 10 thousand ..
    2. high intake
    3. lack of qualified teachers

2 Days for supreme court decision !
    fingers crossed
